A Ride Through Nuremberg’s Historic Old Town
Our short but active cycling tour through and around Nuremberg’s historic Old Town begins at the VAG_Rad-Station by the Königstor, just a short walk from the main railway station.
Covering around 5.2 km, the route takes you through centuries of Nuremberg’s rich history and culture. From iconic landmarks to lesser-known treasures, there is something new to discover around every corner.
Travelling by bike allows you to experience Nuremberg at your own pace. Stop whenever something catches your eye, learn more at the information displays, or simply take a moment to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Nuremberg’s historic squares.
Around Dutzendteich Lake
The area around Dutzendteich Lake, with its lakes, parkland and historic buildings, is one of Nuremberg’s most important recreational areas and can be explored conveniently by bicycle.
This 7.8 km cycling tour takes you through the park landscape surrounding the lake and across parts of the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds. Along the route information panels provide background on the history of the area before and after 1933, as well as on the preservation of the remaining structures after 1945.
The tour starts at the Documentation Center. It can be reached by tram lines 6 and 8 and bus lines 36, 45, 55 and 65. A VAG_Rad-Station is also located there.
Fully FLEXible
The Flexzone in Langwasser inspired this tour, which offers plenty of greenery along with a few gentle inclines. If you get thirsty along the way, simply stop at one of the beer gardens dotted along the route.
We start by taking the U1 subway line to Langwasser Süd. From there, we head straight to the Zollhaus beer garden before continuing along shady forest paths. After passing beneath the highway twice, we reach another possible stop, the Steinbrüchlein beer garden. Along this 12-kilometre-long route, it is easy to forget that you are still within Nuremberg’s city limits.
After another stop at Lock 71 at Weißes Häusla we arrive at the Ludwig-Main-Donau-Canal, whose tranquil waters have since become an important natural habitat. If you would like to take another break, Uschis Treff at Nuremberg Harbour is another great option before ending the tour at Dianaplatz or any other location within the Flexzone.
To Knoblauchsland and Back
This approximately 19-kilometre route starts at Nuremberg Central Station. The cycle route follows the Pegnitz River and passes through the protected Pegnitz Valley West landscape area before reaching the picturesque agricultural landscape of Knoblauchsland.
The route continues past Nuremberg Airport and then through Volkspark Marienberg, Nuremberg’s largest park, before heading back towards the city centre. On the way, you will cycle past Stadtpark, Cramer-Klett Park and Wöhrder Wiese.
The tour ends at Nuremberg Central Station, the perfect starting point for a stroll through the city centre.
Discover Nuremberg
This summer tour starts at Plärrer and takes you through the city to Nuremberg’s largest park, Volkspark Marienberg. Cycle through its expansive green surroundings and past Marienberg Lake before returning to the urban landscape. The route then heads back towards the city centre, passing the Hexenhäusla, a traditional Franconian restaurant with a beautiful beer garden that makes the perfect spot for a break.
Refreshed and recharged, continue downhill to the Pegnitz River, which winds its way through the entire city. Follow the scenic Pegnitz Valley and enjoy the picturesque, protected landscape along the river. Upon reaching Fürth, the route turns back towards Nuremberg, following the Pegnitz once again.
Towards the end of the tour, you can admire landmarks such as the Schlayerturm and the Fronveste before returning to the starting point, where the tour comes to an end.
